LIFE at RCIL’s Youth Services offers Educational Advocacy to empower families with the tools and support they need to create the best educational plans for individuals with disabilities.
LIFE at RCIL works with families and school districts to create effective special education plans, improve communication, and find appropriate services that support students with disabilities in achieving educational and personal success. Together, we can empower all students to reach their full potential both academically and in life.
Program Features
LIFE at RCIL makes sure that every student is set up for success.
- Available for FSS-eligible individuals and their families.
- Collaborations with schools to develop effective special education plans.
- Fosters communication between families and school districts.
- Assists with finding and accessing special education resources.
- Supports students with disabilities in achieving academic independence.
Who We Serve
- Preschool age through 12th grade and is suspected of having a disability.
- The individual can have an IEP or 504 plan.
Payment Options
- If enrolled in Self-Direction (SD), the cost of the service must be included in their SD Budget. If not, the service is free.

Educational advocates are here to assist you with complicated education laws and procedures, whether it is trying to get your child evaluated initially, or to ensure your child is receiving the best programming and services possible.
Do you need assistance reading and interpreting special education documents?
Advocates will help you decipher the technical language of your child’s individual education plan (IEP) or section 504 plan, evaluations, progress reports, and any other communications or documents from the school, so that you can make more informed decisions about your child’s education.

Educational advocates can help you prepare for school meetings, contacting school personnel, and drafting letters such as evaluation requests and requests for program review meetings.
Do you need help making decisions on school placements or program choices?
Advocates can help you explore your child’s options when it comes to the educational programs in the area, including alternative settings, BOCES programs, private schools, such as UCP, and other educational options.
Do you need someone to advocate for your child at IEP meetings?
Meetings with the committee on special education can be overwhelming and frustrating. Advocates can assist you at meetings by asking the right questions, clarifying topics, defining technical terms in clear language, and suggesting alternatives to the committee's recommendations.
