LIFE at RCIL's Academic Scholarship funds help students with disabilities succeed in school and beyond. Available for students in grades 1-12 who are OPWDD eligible in Oneida and Herkimer counties.
RCIL's Academic Scholarship funding provides free tutoring to students with developmental disabilities, neurological impairments, or other types of disabilities by connecting them with certified teachers or tutors. Once approved, families are responsible for hiring a certified teacher or teacher assistant and creating a personalized schedule that meets their individual needs.

- LIFE at RCIL Youth Services will reimburse eligible families for the costs of hiring a certified tutor/teacher.

- Completed Academic Scholarship Application (allows families to apply for up to $2,000 per year)
- Letter of eligibility from OPWDD
- Most recent Life Plan
- Most recent IEP
- Verification of Teacher/Teacher Assistant certification
Payment Options
- If enrolled in Self-Direction (SD), the cost of the service must be included in their SD Budget. If not, the service is free.

Is there a program that reimburses me for tutoring my school age child?
The Academic Scholarship Program through LIFE at RCIL can reimburse families up to $2000 for tutoring services provided by an approved tutor. Children must be OPWDD eligible and be enrolled in kindergarten through 12th grade.
Who are qualified tutors under the Academic Scholarship program?
Approved tutors must be certified teachers or certified teacher assistants. The family is responsible for hiring qualified tutors and setting up a schedule that meets their individual needs.
What are the family responsibilities under the Academic Scholarship program?
All forms are required to be filled out completely before allocations can be made or any payments can be disbursed. The certified teacher/teacher assistant must sign the weekly service log and verification form each time tutoring services are provided.
